About the Course

Belief Based Safety Leadership™ (BBSL™) is a form of leadership which directly addresses the human factor that create barriers to the achievement of a ‘true’ safety culture.

This course teaches techniques and strategies for developing a safety culture where everyone is accountable for safety – for themselves, their team and their organisation. At its foundation, it uses cognitive science to achieve measurable safety, productivity and employee engagement benefits that flow from a ‘true’ safety culture.

This is an opportunity for health and safety managers or others with an interest in the area, to experience this exciting new approach to improving safety within any organisation. BBSL™ facilitates participant discussion around real life safety issues identified by the participants themselves to ensure an understanding of the key concepts and their application to resolve these issues.

Course Content

The material used in this programme is based on the work of leading researchers such as Dr Albert Bandura, Stanford University, Professor Martin Seligman, University of Pennsylvania, and Dr Gary Latham, University of Toronto. The programme also explores the lessons learnt from Irish and International case studies.

The safety leadership component has been tested extensively in the transport, ports and bulk, mining, construction, utilities and health sectors where an understanding of how human factors impact strongly on safety outcomes is an essential part of any leadership Toolkit.

Day 1: Building personal efficacy, optimal thinking styles, changing personal beliefs, attitudes, values, habits and expectations.

Day one challenges and often changes the key underlying paradigms that the individual has about self that impact on their safety performance.

Topics covered include:

  • “Human factors” as barriers and enablers to the achievement of a “true” safety culture
  • Effectiveness/comfort zones           
  • Impact of self-talk – optimism and pessimism
  • All programme content and concepts on day one are referenced to their implications on personal and team safety      

Day 2: Application of the Belief Based Safety Leadership™ toolbox to all levels of the workplace, engaging and motivating others, creating aspiration and accountability, belief and attitude as a motivating force and building leadership at all levels.

During the second day participants have the opportunity to examine how the very practical concepts from day one are applied within an organisation to achieve significant improvement in both productivity and safety.

  • Goal setting – focusing on what we want
  • Professional self-esteem
  • Motivation and engagement
  • Alignment of culture with safety beliefs, values and principles
  • Development of safety strategies and actions around:  
  • Developing and sharing their personal safety philosophy and vision
  • Serving as a safety role model
  • Coaching others to take action
