Introduction

REQUIREMENTS CONCERNING THE TRAINING OF THE VEHICLE CREW

Transport of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR)

The Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road Regulations 2010 and Miscellaneous Provisions Regulations (S.I. No. 617 and 620 of 2010) were signed by the Minister at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment on 21st December 2010.

These Regulations apply to the carriage of dangerous goods by road in tanks, bulk, packages, including the packing, loading, filling and unloading of the dangerous goods in relation to their carriage.

In April 2002, The Health and Safety Authority became the competent authority for administering the examinations for the ADR Driver Training Certificate, required by drivers who transport dangerous goods by road, for all ADR Classes except Class 1 and 7.

In April 2007 the Health & Safety authority appointed the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport as the Examining Agent for ADR Driver training certificate examinations.

REQUIREMENTS CONCERNING THE TRAINING OF THE VEHICLE CREW

General requirements concerning the training of drivers

  • Drivers of vehicles carrying dangerous goods must hold a certificate issued by the competent authority or by an organisation recognised by that authority (CILT) stating that they have participated in a training course and passed an examination on the particular requirements that have to be met during carriage of dangerous goods.
  • Drivers of vehicles carrying dangerous goods must attend a basic training course.
  • Training is be given in the form of a course approved by the competent authority.
