27 July 2010 – The President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), Paul Mallee, has welcomed the Government’s commitment to the prioritisation of Metro North and Dart Underground as outlined in yesterday’s new Infrastructure Investment Priorities, plan.

The Chartered Institute of Logistic & Transport Ireland Future Transport Fuel Forum was held on Thursday 22nd July 2010 in Trinity College Dublin.  A copy of each of the presentations is now available.

There was a packed house for the forum in Trinity College on 22 July 2010. Dr Laurence Gill welcomed everyone to Trinity and CILT Vice President Aidan Murphy stressed the importance of the forum to debate renewable fuel options.

6th July 2010 – The President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), Paul Mallee, has expressed disappointment at reports that significant national road and rail projects may be scrapped as part of cost-saving measures by the Government and relevant transport authorities.

CILT President Paul Mallee FCILT recently was interviewed by Countrymix FM on the Institutes recent press release on the topic of calling for the doubling of penalty points at bank holiday weekends in order to reduce fatalities on Irish roads.

Last year there were 43 reported fatal accidents, the lowest number reported since the establishment of the Authority in 1989. There was also a decrease in the number of non-fatal accidents reported.

Minister Dempsey: “Today marks an important stepping stone in our efforts to increase and improve public transport in Ireland”.

The DART Underground rail project takes another significant step towards delivery today (Wednesday, 30th June) when the formal application is lodged with An Bord Pleanála for the Railway Order granting planning approval for the construction of this key public transport infrastructure scheme.

Road deaths cut by half between 2001-2009

Today in Brussels, Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey TD accepted the 2010 Road Safety PIN Award, in recognition of the Government's sustained successful strategy in reducing road deaths.  The award is made by the European Transport Safety Council and marks outstanding road safety performance among the 27 EU member states.  Road deaths in Ireland were cut by half from 107 per million inhabitants in 2001, to 54 per million inhabitants in 2009, a 41% reduction in 8 years. Ireland is now 7th out of 27 EU member states in road deaths per million and shared the award today with Estonia.

3rd June 2010 - Speaking ahead of the June bank holiday weekend, the President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT)*, Paul Mallee, has called for the doubling of penalty points at bank holiday weekends in order to reduce fatalities on Irish roads.

Thursday night last, seen a large number of CILT members attending the Institute's International speech and Membership Orientation Evening. 

The new rail freight service between Ballina and Dublin, introduced in August of last year, is set to expand further this week.

Iarnród Éireann and International Warehousing and Transport (IWT) teamed up last year to see the return of container trains to Dublin Port.  The new service from Ballina to Dublin Port, initially operated twice weekly in each direction, but this week will increase to three services each way per week.  IWT contract the train from Iarnród Éireann, and sell container and tank space on the train to its customers directly.

Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey TD and Minister of State Ciaran Cuffe TD, today announced that a total of 30 sustainable travel projects will be funded by the Smarter Travel Project Fund. The fund was set up to support implementation of the Government's Smarter Travel Policy, through the delivery of innovative sustainable travel projects.

Students from all over Ireland will take part in walking initiatives to show their support for a greener and healthier environment during this year’s National Walk to School Week, 17-21 May.  Green-Schools across the country will encourage pupils, parents and teachers to walk to school by holding events such as Walk to School days, Walk on Wednesday, Feet First Fridays, sponsored walks, and walking fancy dress competitions.

The Eastern section of The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport Ireland made a visit to the Edenderry Power Plant.  A group of 12 members attended the technical visit where a presentation on the plants operations and a guided tour were offered.  Plant Manager Tom Egan gave a very detailed presentation on the history of the plant and its future plans. 

Edenderry Power Plant is a triple pressure Condensing Turbo-Alternator producing 118MW (net) electrical output Modern Peat Fire Bubbling Fluidised Boiler.  The plant consumes between 1to1.2 million tonnes per year.  The plant directly employees 45 people, and up to 250-300 people in its peat supply/services to the plant. 

The CILT International was hosted by CILT~Malta from Monday 2nd until Friday 7th May in Sliema, Malta. The event was attended by over 120 delegates, representing CILT territories and branches across the world.

A group of 10 members recently visited Weston Airport in Leixlip Co. Kildare.  Weston Airport is the only executive airport in Dublin, situated just 8 miles (13km) from the city. The Airport opened in 1931 and specialises in delivering the travel needs of the executive traveler to Dublin.  Weston also is host to some of Irelands top flighing schools. 

The Minister for Transport Noel Dempsey TD today welcomed the decision by the European Investment Bank Board (representing the 27 European Union member states) to accept the recommendation of its Management Committee to approve a loan of up to €500million for Metro North.

The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport Ireland held it's Annual Golf Day on Friday 07th May 2010 at the Citywest Golf Club.  This year's golf day was organised by the Eastern Section on behalf of the Western Section and marked the 18th year of this event.  Over 22 golfers took part in the competition with prizes sponsored by, Irish Ferries, HazChem Training Ltd., Nightline Delivers, Diageo, C& C Group and Freightwise.

Minister Noel Dempsey TD today welcomed the news that the Railway Procurement Agency has awarded the contract to operate the Integrated Ticketing Scheme to Hewlett-Packard Ireland.

On Thursday 25th February 2010 Joe Coleman CMILT (Western Section Chairperson) made a presentation on "The Stolen Railway" to the Irish Railway Record Society.  The event was well attended with over 40 individuals present to hear the presentation. 

In an economy where operating budgets are tight Health & Safety in the Workplace can be forgotten about or drop on the list of priorities and in turn lead to serious and costly prosecutions.

30 March 2010 - The President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), Paul Mallee, has welcomed the opening of the first phase of the Western Rail Corridor from Limerick to Galway this week, and has called on the Government and local and regional authorities to use it is a vital piece of transport infrastructure and not become a "ghost line."Mr Mallee said that investing in rail transport at this time would help drive investment and foster balanced regional development across the west of the country - an area that has traditionally suffered from poor infrastructure that has hampered economic growth.

Passenger trains run between Limerick and Galway for the first time in over 30 years

Mr. Noel Dempsey T.D., Minister for Transport today, in Galway, opened Phase 1 of the Western Rail Corridor which will provide 5 services each way daily serving Limerick, Ennis, Athenry and Galway as well as the new stations at Sixmilebridge, Gort, Ardrahan and Craughwell. Another new station will be built at Oranmore. There will be four services each way on Sundays.

24th March 2010 – The President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), Paul Mallee, has welcomed the appointment of Minister Batt O’Keeffe as Minister for Enterprise, Trade, and Innovation, and has said that the specific inclusion of innovation as a distinct part of the portfolio is an extremely important development.

24 March 2010 – The President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), Paul Mallee, has reiterated his support for the proposed reduction in the drink driving limit for commercial drivers to 20mg/mls following publication of a new report from the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC) that recommended a series of measures to be applied to professional drivers.  Mr Mallee said that while commercial drivers were statistically less likely to drink drive than ordinary motorists, it was important that an effective zero tolerance approach was adopted given the size and scale of their goods and vehicles.  Mr Mallee said the proposed reduction was an important part of the Road Traffic Bill that is currently proceeding through the Oireachtas including the wider reduction in the drink driving limit for all motorists, and which the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport fully supports.

Mr. Noel Dempsey TD, Minister for Transport today opened the latest section of the N9 between Dublin and Waterford, a 23.5km stretch of high quality dual carriageway, between Waterford city bypass and Knocktopher.  This section is the 3rd section of the N9 to be completed and will bypass the villages of Knocktopher and Mullinavat.

Today Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey TD announced his mandate to the Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) to operate Terminal 2, while demonstrating that it can do so within a benchmark set by the Commission for Aviation Regulation (CAR). This follows a decision to terminate the facility management procurement process relating to Terminal 2 at Dublin Airport.

An EGM of the CILT was held on Wednesday 18th February at 6.00pm at Vernon News in London.

The attendees at the meeting,  and all the proxy votes cast, unanimously voted to adopt proposed changes to the CILT Bye Laws.  

Dempsey announces cross-border initiative to tackle parking and toll offenders

The Department of Transport, together with colleagues in Northern Ireland today announced an innovative new cross-border pilot project. This data exchange project will facilitate the better enforcement of parking fines and toll charges for motorists travelling between both jurisdictions. The initial pilot project, which comes into effect from 3 March 2010 will run until the end of November this year.
