The Health and Safety Authority appointed CILT as the examination body for dangerous goods safety advisers (DGSA) for the transport of dangerous goods by road. For information on the appointment and duties of a DGSA, see DGSA Information - Health and Safety Authority (hsa.ie).
DGSA RAIL
The Commision for Railway Regulation (CRR) is the designated competent authority for general chemical classes as cited in S.I No.651 of 2010 and has appointed CILT as examiner for the DGSA Rail assesment in these classes.

Candidates sitting all 3 Papers: €395.
For candidates who wish to sit 2 papers, the fee will be €260.
For candidates who wish to sit 1 paper, the fee will be €130.

Examination fees are non-refundable except where the candidate cannot sit the exam due to illness. In this circumstance, a doctor’s certificate must be supplied.

All DGSA examinations are open book exams.
Since 1 January 2019, the format of the DGSA Road exam consists of 2 examination papers.
Paper 1 will be conducted on the morning of the Examination
Paper 2 will be conducted on the afternoon of the Examination
DGSA Rail consists of 3 papers:
Paper 1 Core
Paper 2 All Classes
Paper 3 Mode - Rail
All papers are set by the panel of Subject Matter Experts and exam submissions are graded by the Principle Marker. Any exam scoring within 5% without passing is automatically sent for review by an alternative marker before results are published.

ADR 2025
ADR 2025 is now available in print, it came into force on 1st January 2025. From March 2025 the DGSA exam will be based on the content of the ADR 2025.

RAIL DGSA
The DGSA examination is based on the current edition of Regulations concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Rail (RID) and the EUROPEAN COMMUNITIES (TRANSPORT OF DANGEROUS GOODS BY RAIL) REGULATIONS, 2010 as amended (the national regulations).
Please note the following document contains corrections to the edition of RID in force since January 2023. This document may be used in the Rail Mode DGSA exam.
Candidates will receive their result by email within 40 working days.
Results will NOT be provided over the phone.
A DGSA certificate is valid for 5 years.
To renew your DGSA Cert you must resit the DGSA exams every 5 years.
Inclusion of course providers does not imply recognition or approval by the Health and Safety Authority or CILT, of the courses, services or information supplied by the said course providers.
