ADR is the acronym given to the Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road.
CILT is the examining body for the ADR Driver Training Certificate appointed by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA).

ADR basic and tanker specialisation exams are held twice a month in Kildare and once a month in Cork and Limerick.
If you are sitting both exams on the same day, you will sit the ADR basic exam first, followed by a 15 minute break and then the tanker specialisation exam.
All candidates must bring their notification letter and photo ID (e.g. driving licence/passport) with them on the day.
Reasonable Accommodations
Any candidate with additional support needs may apply to CILT, through a training provider, for an adjustment to the published assessment arrangements. To be considered for an adjustment to the assessment arrangements, a candidate must:
Submit a written application, through the training provider, to CILT at least seven days before the start of their exam.
Provide written evidence of their condition, in the form of an educational psychological assessment, specialist teacher’s assessment or similar evaluation by an educational specialist.
Each request for an adjustment to the assessment arrangements will be considered against the evidence provided, on a case-by-case basis. CILT may request further evidence. If the application is accepted, CILT will provide written permission for adjustments to the assessment arrangements to be applied.
The primary adjustment is the activation of a reading application on the exam, candidates will supply their own headphones (wired with 3.5mm jack). Approved training providers are required to demonstrate the reading application to candidates prior to the exam.

In addition to an adjustment to assessment arrangements, training providers have responsibilities under legislation to ensure that all candidates are treated fairly and with respect, and that premises and facilities are accessible to all.

The ADR exam is completed via an online multiple choice questionnaire.
The exam is conducted only in approved exam venues.
Candidates need to be familiar with the use of a computer mouse to select answers and navigate the questionnaire.

ADR basic exam
Candidates must attain an overall pass-mark of 24 or higher (out of 36) with a minimum of 8 questions out of 12 answered correctly in each section.
Tanker specialisation exam
Candidates must attain an overall pass-mark of 16 or higher (out of 24) with a minimum of 8 questions out of 12 answered correctly in each section.
NOTE: Candidates sitting both the ADR basic and tanker specialisation exams must pass the ADR basic exam to be eligible for the certificate.
Candidates will receive a email notification informing them if they have passed or failed. It is not possible to provide results over the phone
Candidates that have passed will be issued with an ADR Driver Training Certificate by post.
Candidates who have failed will receive a email notification indicating the areas that need to be addressed.
The ADR Driver Training Certificate is valid for 5 years.
Under ADR regulations all certificate holders must attend a refresher course (ADR basic 1 day course/ tanker specialisation 1 day course) and sit a refresher exam(s) to be eligible for another 5 year ADR cert.
This refresher course(s) and exam(s) can be done at any time in the last 12 months of the current ADR cert but must be completed before the expiration date.
We recommend holders do the refresher course(s) and exam(s) early to allow for possible repeats if necessary.
If your cert has already expired and no refresher course(s) or exam(s) have been taken then, under ADR regulations, the holder must repeat the full ADR basic training course (3 days) and/or tanker specialisation training course (2 days) before being allowed to sit the exam(s) again.
Renewal of ADR Driving Certificate from other Contracting Parties
Certificates issued in any contracting party state may be renewed under the same process outlined above - however as CILT has no record of your current cert you will be required to provide a copy of the front and back of your current cert before a new cert will be issued. Your new expiry date will be consistent with the expiry date of your original cert.
Please note - refresher courses and exams can only be undertaken on a like for like basis. Refresher training cannot be used to expand the scope of a restricted cert. Where your current cert is restricted and no matching refresher training/exams are available you may need to complete Initial training and exams, such candidates should consult with their training provider for guidance.
Candidates must contact an approved ADR training course provider and arrange to attend a basic ADR and/or tanker specialisation course before applying to sit the exam(s).
On completion of ADR training, the course provider will register the candidates on this platform. The provider will complete the declaration of attendance section and confirm the candidate’s completion of the course, approving them to sit the examinations.
Candidates must sit the ADR basic exam within 12 months of completion of training.
Guidance for Candidate Photograph & Signature.
The Exam Application form includes a n upload for the Photograph and Signature that will used in the creation of your ADR license, please keep the following guidance in mind when preparing your application.
What type of photograph is acceptable?
A colour photograph image of the head and shoulders, not more than 6 months old, in sharp focus with the entire face visible.
The photos should show a close up of your face and the top of your shoulders so that your face takes up between 70% and 80% of the frame. It should be passport-standard and in portrait orientation (taller than it is wide)
Minimum size of photo: 35mm x 45mm
Maximum size of photo: 38mm x 50mm
Quality
Photos must be in sharp focus and correctly exposed.
There should be no ink marks or creases in the uploaded image
Landscape orientation of photos will not be accepted.
Please ensure you have a neutral expression with your mouth closed and eyes open,
looking directly at the camera.
Please do not wear hats or anything that covers your face and be free of glare, tint or other obstructions from glasses etc.
Photographs must be taken against a plain and white background.
Photographs must not be damaged (staples or pins) or creased.
What type of signature is acceptable?
The signature should be in black ink and wholly within the designated box.
Please note that due to the nature of the guilloche pattern on the ADR certificate the signature can appear faint when printed on the photo card if it is not in black ink. CILT will not be able to print certificates with signatures that do not meet the guidelines above.
